By: Rudy Mena

I am Rudy. I am going to interview coach EL Smith. He is important because he plays an important part for the basketball team.  The coach is the one that plays an important role for the players. The coach instructs the player and team on the skills of basketball and the coach improves a team’s performance and athletes skill by developing practice drills and conditioning seasons. I am writing this interview in Q&A style. He is going to  answer the questions that I asked.

What is your coaching/teaching history?

I have been coaching/teaching for 7 years! I have enjoyed the time here at Cyprus and it has been fun for me to be at my alma mater.

What made you want to coach? Why?

There are a couple of things that made me want to coach! I love the kids and I think it’s my way of giving back to the community. I have a strong love for the game, and I want to pass that on to the young kids growing up and give them the most knowledge. The game of basketball has done a lot for me personally.

How has covid affected the way you coach?

Covid has been challenging and added a lot of different stresses on me personally, but we have managed to deal with it. I know it’s been tough for many; I just try and stay positive and do my job.

What do you look for in a player/ participant? Why?

I look for kids/players who love the game! You must enjoy being in the gym and wanting to get better. No one should force you to do anything in life, and I approach the game of basketball the same way.

What goal do you have for the team /group this year? Why?

Our goals and expectations have changed… We expect to be competitive and compete at a high level on a nightly basis. We want to have a high seed going into the playoffs and compete in the first round.

What life lessons do you want your players to learn from sports/activity?

I want my kids to learn how to work hard, overcome adversity and enjoy the successes that come along with it. Sports teach you a lot about teamwork, accountability, and discipline. These are all important qualities in life.

What is your proudest moment as a coach/ leader?

We recently won the Riverton Holiday Tournament for the first time in 10+ years. Great accomplishment for the kids/program. It was fun for all involved.

Who is your favorite player on the team ?

I don’t have any favorite players… Kids that work hard and take care of business on and off the court are my favorite players.

what is difficult being a coach

The difficulty is the time/commitment that it takes. You lose time from your family, but you need to balance it all.

How would you describe your leadership

My leadership style would be  individual motivations.  and being their for my boys and being strict with them  the engagement of people,
