Girls Varsity Wrestling · Student Profile: Cheyenne Cummings – Wrestling

By: Kendra Bennett

Cheyenne Cummings, junior, is a part of the Cyprus High School girls wrestling team.

How did you get started with wrestling and why did you do it?

I had heard about wrestling, and I thought it sounded like a lot of fun. I had some friends who were getting into it, so I decided I would join them and I am really glad that I did.

Is it hard managing school, work and wrestling? How do you do it?

It can get hard sometimes, but it just depends on how you manage it, and if you’re able to manage it. For me, I try to get as far ahead on school so I don’t fall behind. It helps so that I can focus on both wrestling and school and not let one of them get the best of me.

Do you plan on continuing your sport after high school? Explain

I really enjoy wrestling so I would really like to continue doing it outside of high school. I think a lot of my friends are going to do it as well so it would be a lot of fun to continue wrestling with all of them

What do you like about your team?

My team is very supportive and they are always there for each other. We always push each other to do our best. Throughout my time being on this team, I have met a lot of new people and made so many new friends and that is one thing I am very grateful for.

What makes you proud of Cyprus and your team?

I feel like, overall, our team is actually very good. Even when we do lose, we take it as a learning experience rather than becoming petty about it and we just have fun with it.

How has wrestling impacted you?

It has given me something to become passionate about and something that I really enjoy doing. Wrestling is a great way for me to relieve stress because in the moment, all I think about is wrestling.

Who is someone in the sport that you look up to and why?

For me, my coaches are one of my biggest inspirations. They have taught me a lot throughout my wrestling experience. I would not be as good as I am now without them.

How has COVID affected wrestling this year?

I am just grateful that I am still allowed to be wrestling and I have the opportunity to do what I love because I know a lot of things have been changed or canceled. The only major difference that I have seen is the requirement to wear masks.

Do you do anything during off season to prepare? Why or why not?

I just make sure that I stay in shape and stay ahead of myself. I still practice here and there just to keep myself on track and not working backwards.

What is the hardest thing about wrestling? What is the easiest?

The hardest thing for me is trying to keep up with wrestling while also keeping up with everything else in my life. As I have been doing it more and more I am learning how to manage my time a lot better and I think that is another important thing that wrestling has taught me.
